National Cyber Security Awareness Month: Beware of Password Sharing

October 16, 2013

All designated school officials (DSOs) have their own username and password to access the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). As a DSO, you will use SEVIS to update your school’s Form I-17, “Petition for Approval of School for Attendance of Nonimmigrant Student,” and to keep your students’ records up to date. Because each DSO has access to a personal account, you must not share your password with anyone else.

Password sharing is a security risk that can compromise the accountability, integrity and confidentially of SEVIS. Giving your username or password to anyone else is a violation of the Department of Homeland Security Sensitive Systems Policy Directive.

National Cyber Security Awareness Month is a good time to remind yourself to stay secure online and share this information with your colleagues.
