What School Officials Need to Remember About Filing for Recertification

September 5, 2013

Schools that have certification from the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) go through the recertification process every two years. As part of this process the principal designated school official (PDSO) must file for recertification within 180 days of the certification expiration date listed in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) by submitting a complete recertification package to SEVP.

We have more in-depth information about the recertification process on the recertification page. Here are some tips for how to file for recertification properly.

For the PDSO:

  • Review all the information in your school's Form I-17, "Petition for Approval of School for Attendance by Nonimmigrant Students.”
  • File any necessary Form I-17 updates immediately (complete with signatures from PDSO, all designated school officials, and the president, owner or head of the school or school system on the Form I-17A, “Record of Designated School Officials”) and an attestation statement.
  • Respond to any requests for evidence we send during an update.
  • Submit the recertification package as soon as possible but no later than 30 days prior to the school’s certification expiration date, which expires at 12:01 a.m.
  • Submit the school’s recertification package in SEVIS and electronically submit (fax or e-mail) signed, scanned copies of the Form I-17 and Form I-17A and any other necessary supporting documentation.

In general:

  • If we receive the recertification package after the close of business one day before your certification expiration date, we cannot review your package until the next business day. SEVIS may temporarily withdraw your school due to processing time.
  • Upon receipt of your complete package, our School Recertification Team will send you a notice of confirmation of complete filing. If you do not receive notice before your certification expiration date expires, SEVIS will automatically withdraw your school.
  • If your submission is incorrect for any reason, you will receive a notice of rejection of complete filing. This notice will state any errors found in your recertification package. Be sure to correct the information as soon as possible.
  • Remember, you only have 180 days to apply for recertification. We will not grant any extensions.
  • We will send a notice of recertification if we do not need any additional information and your school continues to operate according to relevant federal laws and regulations.
