National Preparedness Month: Use Government Resources to Be Prepared

Being prepared for natural disasters or other emergency situations is important and requires your participation. Make sure you stay informed, make a plan, build a kit and get involved in your community. The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Ready.gov website has many resources that can help you through this process.
Here are some helpful tips:
- Sign up for emergency alerts to get updates on weather in your area.
- Create your own emergency plan using Ready.gov.
- Build your own emergency supply kit using this emergency checklist to make sure you have everything you need.
- Read free copies of FEMA’s Ready materials to get more involved in preparedness.
- Join FEMA’s National Preparedness Community to learn more about what others are doing and what you can do in your community.
- Carry with you all important documents you may need in case of an emergency, including the following:
- Emergency contact information for your designated school official and the Student and Exchange Visitor Program
- Your Form I-20, “Certificate on Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status”
- Your passport
- Your visa
- Your Social Security card (if applicable)
- Financial records
- Plane tickets (if applicable)
- Your Form I-766, “Employment Authorization Document” (if applicable)
- Checks, credit cards and some cash
