National Preparedness Month: Use Government Resources to Be Prepared

September 10, 2013

Being prepared for natural disasters or other emergency situations is important and requires your participation. Make sure you stay informed, make a plan, build a kit and get involved in your community. The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Ready.gov website has many resources that can help you through this process.

Here are some helpful tips:

  • Sign up for emergency alerts to get updates on weather in your area.
  • Create your own emergency plan using Ready.gov.
  • Build your own emergency supply kit using this emergency checklist to make sure you have everything you need.
  • Read free copies of FEMA’s Ready materials to get more involved in preparedness.
  • Join FEMA’s National Preparedness Community to learn more about what others are doing and what you can do in your community.
  • Carry with you all important documents you may need in case of an emergency, including the following:
    • Emergency contact information for your designated school official and the Student and Exchange Visitor Program
    • Your Form I-20, “Certificate on Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status”
    • Your passport
    • Your visa
    • Your Social Security card (if applicable)
    • Financial records
    • Plane tickets (if applicable)
    • Your Form I-766, “Employment Authorization Document” (if applicable)
    • Checks, credit cards and some cash
