What F and M Students Need to Know about Massive Open Online Courses

August 1, 2013

Many colleges and universities now offer massive open online courses (MOOCs). MOOCs are different from traditional course offerings in three specific ways:

  • Taught exclusively online
  • Have high enrollment (perhaps hundreds or thousands of students)
  • Have little one-on-one involvement by professors

Forbes recently reported that some MOOC providers now can translate courses into different languages. As these courses grow in popularity, it is important for you as an F or M student to follow regulations to maintain your student status.

While you may enroll in online or distance courses each term, regulations strictly limit those courses from counting toward the full course of study requirement for an F or M student:

  • An F student may count only one distance education course toward a full course of study for each academic term.
  • An M student may not count any online or distance education courses toward a full course of study.
  • An English language program student may not count any online or distance education toward a full course of study.

If you have questions, talk to your designated school official.
