Growing Numbers of International Students Enroll in U.S. Military Schools

August 28, 2013

Note: The Department of Defense is not currently accepting MAVNI applications for FY 17 while it is revising its MAVNI implementation plan. Once it begins to accept enlistments, SEVP will provide additional information at that time. For more information please visit the What is MAVNI? Resource page.

Military service is important for countries around the world, including the United States. U.S. service academies (U.S. Military Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Coast Guard Academy and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy) teach students about various military tactics and help them develop important leadership skills to use in their degree programs. Did you know that F students can and do attend U.S. service academies?

The popularity of these schools among the international community continues to grow each year. For example, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy enrolled its first international student in 1971. This year’s class is the largest yet with eight international students who have enrolled as freshman in the Class of 2017.

Remember, you may apply to any school that is certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program to accept F and/or M students. We also have information about Military Accessions Vital to the National Interest (MAVNI).MAVNI allows certain non-citizens who are legally present in the United States to join the U.S. military and apply immediately for U.S. citizenship without first obtaining lawful permanent residence. If you have questions, talk to the designated school official at your school.
