Back to School: Checking in with your DSO

August 21, 2013

With the beginning of the school year quickly approaching, it is important to remember that as an F or M student you need to check in with your designated school official (DSO) within 30 days of entering the United States (and no later than the program start date listed on your Form I-20, "Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Status"). If you have questions about requirements for class attendance, employment or continuing your education after your program of study, talk to your DSO immediately. Also, remember to talk to your DSO if any of the following has changed or you are planning to change them during the school year:

  • Change of major, program, degree or educational level
  • Transfer to a new school
  • Take temporary absence from school
  • Travel outside the United States
  • Move to a new address
  • Change your legal name
  • Request a program extension
  • Work in the United States
  • Want to participate in a study abroad program

Also, talk to your DSO to ensure your data in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) is accurate and up-to-date. DSOs are here to help you understand how to maintain your status while studying in the United States.

If you have any questions about traveling back to the United States, or if you forget documentation and U.S. Customs and Border Protection issues you a Form I-515A, “Notice to Student or Exchange Visitor,” contact your DSO for help.
