Excellence Grows in Community Colleges

April 9, 2013

Attending a community college is one option for a prospective F or M student who wants to study in the United States. A community college is different from a traditional four-year school in size and degree type; however, this type of school offers various opportunities for graduates, including a pathway to a four-year school, affordability, relevance and industry partnerships.

Community college experiences are continuing to improve. Their benefits and growth have caught the attention of President Barack Obama and Second Lady Dr. Jill Biden, who is a community college professor.

According to Dr. Biden, “Community colleges are often unsung heroes in their work to expand opportunities, offer intensive preparation for careers, and provide an affordable and effective option for many students.” They also “… represent a uniquely American idea – that if you work hard and get a good education, you can get the skills you need for a good job and build a better life…”

We previously posted about opportunities for students who study science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) subjects at community colleges, but these schools offer a variety of programs. You have other options, though, including liberal arts, general studies and vocational programs.

According to the American Association of Community Colleges, seven percent of students currently enrolled at community colleges are not U.S. citizens. Could you be the next to enroll? If you are thinking about studying in the United States and choosing community college, make sure your school is certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program.
