Here to Help provides information on each of the government agencies that has a role in the international student process

The U.S. Department of Education has several programs and initiatives to “promote student achievement and preparation for global competitiveness by fostering educational excellence and ensuring equal access.”

For F and M students, as well as other international students studying in the United States, the U.S. Department of Education has important roles, ranging from ensuring program funding to protecting students from discrimination.

The U.S. Department of Education offers several resources to help before and during your time in the United States:

  • U.S. Institutions and Programs– It is very important to research schools and programs before applying to study in the United States. The U.S. Department of Education offers information to help explain opportunities and to help students find an accredited school or university. For an F or M student, the accredited school or university must also be Student and Exchange Visitor Program-certified.
  • Financial Assistance– You must be able to prove that you are able to fund your studies while in the United States. The U.S. Department of Education helps you learn about your financing options and directs you to additional information about financial assistance.
  • Working in the United States– Some international students have the opportunity to work while in the United States. This resource explains the process and qualifications for working in the United States. As an F or M student, remember that you have specific responsibilities and opportunities unavailable to students in the United States in a different visa class. There are also some important restrictions on employment that you should know about (Consult your designated school official.)
