Making the Most out of Your College Experience

September 25, 2012

Studying at a college or university in the United States offers unique academic and social opportunities. USA Today College has some tips for students on how to make the most out of their college experience and become part of the larger campus community.

  • Make friends early – It may seem intimidating to meet new people, but take the time to get to know the students around you. Many are probably new to the campus, just like you.
  • Attend events – Many schools offer welcome programs and events for incoming students. Attending different events is a great way to meet fellow classmates with similar interests while you learn more about your school.
  • Attend sporting events– College athletics are a unique part of campus culture and tradition. Attending sporting events is a fun way to meet and interact with other students, integrate into the community and experience school spirit.
  • Get to know the campus – Take the time to explore your campus and community when you arrive. Learning more about the campus and its layout will help you feel more comfortable as you navigate around.
  • Attend social events – Activities that allow you to enjoy campus life outside the classroom are one of the most important components of the campus experience in the United States. Participating in various events is a great way to meet other students and enjoy social activities offered by the school’s campus community.

U.S. News & World Report also has some tips for international students. According to the article, one of the most important suggestions is to go into the experience with a positive attitude and assume you are about to embark on one of the greatest journeys of your life. “If you start out with an optimistic attitude and are prepared and willing to accept the bad with the good, then you are setting yourself up for success. All-in-all, the best approach is the simplest: smile, relax, and prepare.”

You can learn more about every step in the international student process from the Study Guide to the States.
