Back to School: Checking in with your DSO

August 15, 2012

With the beginning of the school year quickly approaching, it is important to remember that as an F or M student you need to check in with your designated school official (DSO) within 30 days of entering in the United States (and no later than the program start date listed on your Form I-20, "Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status"). If you have questions about requirements for class attendance, employment or hopes to continue your education at the end of your program of study, speak with your DSO immediately. Also, remember to speak with your DSO if any of the following has changed or you plan to change during the school year:

  • Change your major, program or degree level
  • Change your education level
  • Transfer to a new school or take a leave of absence
  • Take a break from school
  • Travel outside the United States
  • Move to a new address
  • Change your name
  • Request a program extension

Also, check with your DSO to ensure your data in SEVIS is accurate and up to date. DSOs are here to help you understand how to maintain your status while studying in the United States.

If you have any questions about traveling back to the United States, or if you forget documentation and U.S. Customs and Border Protection issues you a Form I-515A, "Notice to Student or Exchange Visitor," contact your DSO for help.
