Advice for Students Interested in Studying at a U.S. Medical School

August 17, 2012

Receiving acceptance to and paying for medical school in the United States may be difficult for international students. An articleby U.S. News & World Report advises international students not to “be discouraged if you are determined to attend a medical school in the United States,” and offers three tips to help students with the application process:

Do your research – Learning about schools and their requirements can help you identify the necessary application steps. Additionally, conducting research can help you decide which schools offer the most interesting opportunities and what programs best fit for your personal goals.

Complete U.S. coursework – Most schools require applicants to have a bachelor’s degree from a U.S. college or university. Planning ahead and completing undergraduate coursework in the United States can help your chances of gaining acceptance to a medical school within the United States.

Weigh the options – M.D. programs and Ph.D. programs offer different benefits. Knowing the requirements and components of different programs can help you decide what programs will be the best fit. A combined M.D./Ph.D. may be a better option.
