International Students Help their Communities

May 10, 2012

During their time studying in the United States, international students become a part of the campus community. Some F and M students want to help community members in need.

The Oklahoma Daily reported that students at the University of Oklahoma (OU) recently worked with the school’s International Advisory Committee (IAC) to assist at a local homeless shelter. The groups of volunteers spent three hours cleaning the shelter after a series of storms hit the area. Hillary Medina, an OU student, said that the IAC was a good way for international students to get “… involved with the local community.”

Many international students participate in community service. Study in the States previously reported on a story about international students who volunteered their time during spring break to assist communities devastated by tornadoes in various areas of the country.

Any F or M student who does not receive any form of taxable income from the community service may volunteer. If you are an F or M student and the volunteer position is one for which an employer would officially hire someone, you cannot work there without work authorization. Talk with your designated school official about any questions you may have about volunteering.
