International Students and the GRE

May 10, 2012

Many post-graduate programs at universities in the United States may require applicants to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). This test is available in more than 160 countries and 700 test centers around the world administer it.

The GRE has three sections:

  • Verbal Reasoning – analysis, evaluation and synthesis of information gathered from text; analysis of “relationships among component parts of sentences; and … (recognition of) relationships among words and concepts”
  • Quantitative Reasoning – mathematical problem solving
  • Analytical Writing – critical thinking and writing skills, primarily the abilities to exhibit clear and effective communication and to “support complex ideas”

Beginning July 1, 2012, the test will require a $175 fee. If a student is interested in receiving additional score reports, an additional $25 fee per recipient is necessary.

For more information and exam taking locations, visit the official GRE website. After you find a school you want to attend, speak with the designated school official to learn more about the school’s requirements for admission.
