International and American Students Unite Through Annual World Cup Soccer Tournament

April 26, 2012

Students at Northwestern University’s International Student Association (NU ISA) recently hosted the fourth annual World Cup soccer tournament on campus, an event that brings together international and American students on campus each year.

The World Cup tournament brings together 32 teams named after 32 countries for a two-day soccer tournament involving more than 400 students. Interest in the tournament has increased so much that the NU ISA now has a separate organization to plan and oversee the event. The World Cup soccer tournament grew in just four years from 150 students and 16 teams to nearly three times the students and twice as many teams.

The tournament is one way the NU ISA reaches out to the Northwestern community, highlighting the international student program at the university. While the NU ISA hosts the soccer tournament, the tournament’s sponsorship chair, Akhil Menon, was quick to remind people that the tournament is for all to enjoy. Menon said, “The ISA World Cup is not just for international students. We’re all very friendly.”
