April College Admissions Checklist for International Students

April 26, 2012

The New York Times education blog, The Choice, introduced a special series in March 2012 – The Counselor’s Calendar. This blog series provides expert advice for students throughout the college admission process. In March, the New York Times article highlighted key steps for international students preparing for college. This month focused on the important steps for international students after they received acceptance to a school and advice for making their final decision. Some of the admission tipsprovided by an EducationUSA outreach coordinator at the Institute of International Education included the following:

  • Do not get discouraged – Do not be disheartened if you do not get into your first choice school. Continue searching other options and research additional schools in the United States.

  • Finalize finances – Consider the total costs for schooling by also including the cost of living in the United States during your time of study. By now, you should know if you have received approval for financial aid for your studies

  • Contact your designated school official (DSO) – The DSO at your school will give you a Form I-20 after you receive acceptance to the school and can give you information on how to apply for a student visa.

Next month’s checklist will provide advice for international students on how to prepare for the visa interview. You can find more information about every step of studying in the United States by launching the Study Guide to the States.
