Prospective Students: Check Credentials of Universities Before Applying

December 8, 2011

In light of government investigations into fraudulent institutions, Acting Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the Department of State, Adam Ereli, spoke at a the Washington Foreign Press Center recently where he addressed the issue of fraudulent universities.

Ereli focused his comments on the need for students to conduct proper research and consult with EducationUSA advisors prior to applying at and attending universities in the United States. According to an article from the Press Trust of India, Ereli noted that “the Bureau of Education and Culture Affairs in the State Department…is working to ensure that if students go to the United States to study, that the process of finding out about the university, communicating with the university, is done in an open and transparent way.”

It is also important to make sure that whatever school you plan to attend has certification from the Student and Exchange Visitor Program. Only schools that are SEVP-certified may accept international students. You can make sure that your school is SEVP-certified by using our school search page.

If you are a current student at a school that is no longer SEVP-certified, find more information here.
