Universities Help International Students Adjust to Life in United States

November 11, 2011

Many U.S. universities are making efforts to help international students adjust to life in the United States. In particular, the University of Oklahoma and the University of Kansas are trying to help their students feel more at home.

At the University of Kansas, a graduate student started the International Family Association, which supports international students and their families by providing various opportunities to help students adjust to their new environment, according to The University Daily Kansan.

In an October 28, 2011, editorial, the editorial board of The Oklahoma Daily reports, “A variety of student groups exist to encourage and support international and exchange students, as well as integrate them into the campus community.” The university also makes resources available to help nonimmigrant students navigate the legal process of coming to the United States, settle and get involved on campus after their arrival.

Many of the most popular schools for international students have similar program for international students that serve as a support group amongst their international peers. International students well represented in their school’s student body may find it easier to get involved with those built-in support networks.
