NYC Mayor Calls for International Student Retention
New York City Mayor, Michael Bloomberg, spoke recently at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce where he addressed the need for immigration reform in order to improve the country’s economic and job outlook, according to a CBS report.
Echoing his words from a June speech, Mayor Bloomberg expressed, “that current immigration laws are prohibitive to foreign students to have any incentive of wanting to stay in the United States.” Bloomberg called kicking international students out of the country a bad move for the United States. “Other countries are bending over backwards to attract these students and we’re helping them to do it. We've become a laughing-stock of the world with this policy,” he remarked.
The mayor mentioned that about two-thirds of computer science degree and engineering Ph.D. earners at U.S. universities are international students. “These are the individuals who make the discoveries and innovations that propel business and create jobs for Americans. And they’re already here on our soil,” he said.
Mayor Bloomberg also believes that a policy should be set in place that will offer these international students “green cards when they finish their degrees” as he believes “there is no such thing as too many engineers, too many scientists, or too many technological innovators. We need all of them in this country.”
