Increase in University of Iowa International Students is good for Local Economy

September 28, 2011

In the past four years, the University of Iowa has quadrupled the number of international students enrolled at its university, according to an article in The Gazette.  As a result, international students “have brought in about $33 million in tuition alone since 2007” and contributed approximately “$67 million a year to the local economy … [and] more than $245 million to” the state of Iowa.

According to the article, the assistant dean of international programs at Iowa notes that, “the growing international presence on campus helps better prepare Iowa students for the increasingly global job market.” He also credits the increase in international student attendance to the university’s practice of sending staff members to fairs in all parts of the world to recruit students to its campus.
