Students: Register for a Full Course of Study this Academic Term
To maintain status F-1 or M-1 students studying in the United States must enroll in a full course of study at their Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP)-certified school.
As an international student, you may need to register for classes, and it is important that you understand what a full course of study means to ensure your course schedule fulfills this requirement.
The full course of study requirement varies depending on your nonimmigrant status, education level and program of study. To help you remain compliant, we added a new resource to the Students section of Study in the States. On this resource page, you can find information about:
- Full course of study requirements for F-1 and M-1 students at kindergarten – 12 grade schools.
- Full course of study requirements for F-1 students in post-secondary programs of study (e.g., after high school).
- Full course of study requirements for M-1 students in post-secondary programs of study (e.g., after high school).
- Online courses and “Distance Learning.”
If you have questions about the full course of study requirement or are unsure if your course schedule fulfills the requirement, please talk with your designated school official to verify that your schedule meets the requirements to maintain your status.
