SEVIS II

SEVP is in the process of developing the next generation of the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). The new system, known as SEVIS II, will address some issues in the current SEVIS and be easier to use. SEVIS II will continue to serve the same basic purpose as SEVIS while introducing new functionality to make improvements. SEVIS II is expected to launch sometime in the near future.

What's different about SEVIS II?

SEVIS II will hold information on the same students and schools, with some changes to process and access.

  • SEVIS II will create an entirely paperless process for all immigration activities related to the students and exchange visitors. In SEVIS II, paper Forms I-20 and DS-2019 will no longer be used when applying for visas or entry into the United States. In SEVIS II, students and exchange visitors and school and sponsor officials will use electronic signatures to sign electronic forms related to the immigration process.
  • Government officials will also use SEVIS II or a system that links to SEVIS II to document electronically decisions about visa issuance, changes of status, entry into the United States, and other requests for benefits such as employment authorization.
  • While the immigration process will be paperless, SEVIS II will have a report for students and exchange visitors to print and use when seeking benefits within the United States such as state driver's licenses and bank accounts.
  • SEVIS II will permit students and exchange visitors to create user accounts and directly access their own information in the system. This feature of SEVIS II will allow students and exchange visitors to view information about their status, immigration benefits, and payment of fees.
  • SEVIS II will create a new, person-centric system and support the concept of one-person one-record. SEVIS II will do this by assigning each individual a unique immigration identification number (IIN) upon creation of the customer account. Each person will have the same customer account and IIN for life. So, if someone comes to the United States as a student, goes home for two or three years, and decides to return to the United States to study, he or she would use the same customer account and IIN. That allows SEVIS to maintain a better history of activities for each individual.
  • SEVIS II will generate and display an admissibility indicator for each student and exchange visitor (along with their spouses and dependents) that reflects whether they are currently eligible to enter the United States in F, M, or J status. Through customer accounts, students and exchange visitors will be able to view their admissibility indicator. The admissibility indicator will be based on information in a student's SEVIS II record and a set of system business rules to determine the status of the admissibility indicator.
