Recertification Series: Save these Recertification Resources

June 18, 2019

As your institution’s time to renew their Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) certification approaches, make sure that you have these resources saved! These resources will be very helpful as your school prepares for the recertification process.

  • Getting Started with SEVP Recertification – This resource page is a good place to start as your SEVP-certified school’s certification expiration date (CED) approaches. The page shares general information on the recertification process and what you should expect.
  • Recertification Checklist – This checklist allows you to easily see and keep track of all the steps your school must take to make sure that you are submitting a complete petition.
  • Recertification Help Hub Page – This SEVIS Help Hub page provides in-depth instructions and screenshots for the recertification process, everything from the initial email about your CED to submitting your recertification petition. It outlines the entire recertification process, including the steps that SEVP takes.
  • ICE.gov Recertification Tab – Additional information on recertification can be found on the Recertification tab of the Schools page on ICE.gov/SEVP, including quick recertification filing tips and instructions on what needs to be included in your recertification petition.

Remember that every SEVP-certified school must file for recertification every two years, and that your school’s Form I-17, “Petition for Approval of School for Attendance by Nonimmigrant Student.” is locked once you submit your petition. Schools may submit Form I-17 updates while filing for recertification. However, a change of ownership or a change of location must be submitted for adjudication prior to filing for recertification.

Keep in mind that starting June 24, 2019, SEVP-certified schools will be required to pay a $1,250 fee when filing for recertification. For case specific questions, please contact the SEVP Response Center.
