The United States Sees a 9 Percent Increase in the Number of F, M and J Visa Holders

September 3, 2015

In the last year, the United States saw a 9 percent increase in the number of F and M students, exchange visitors and their dependents coming into the country according to the latest SEVIS by the Numbers report.

SEVIS by the Numbers is a quarterly report from the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) that highlights nonimmigrant student and exchange visitor trends based on information collected in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS).

Although there was a slight decrease in the number of F and M students studying in the United States since the last report in February 2015, the overall trend for welcoming international students and their families into the country continues to rise.

The report indicates that there are more than one million F and M students studying in the country and more than 8,000 SEVP-certified schools that enroll them, making the United States a top destination for international students looking to study outside of their countries of origin.

You can download and read the full report on the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement website, which also takes a closer look at international student trends in California, New York and Texas — the three leading host states for F and M students.

We also encourage you to visit our Mapping SEVIS by the Numbers page to explore more in-depth information about where international students come from, what they study and what states they live in when they arrive.
