Learn about Working in the United States

May 11, 2015
The U.S. government takes working illegally very seriously, so as an international student it is important to be familiar with the rules and regulations about working in the United States.

Before you can begin working in the United States, the first step is to talk with your designated school official (DSO). Your DSO will help you understand the rules. If your DSO knows you are working without permission, they must report it to the government through the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System, and your student record can be terminated. A terminated record means that you will have to leave the United States and may not be allowed to return.

There are two main types of work opportunities that may be available to you, depending on your visa and program of study. This includes: on-campus and off-campus employment. Each has different rules and requirements. For more information on the rules for each type of employment opportunity, please visit the updated Working in the United States page on Study in the States.
