Two Ways to Find Financial Aid in the United States

April 21, 2015
For most international students, studying in the United States is a big financial responsibility. In addition to school tuition, F and M students must pay for housing, books, living, travel expenses and more. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security does not offer financial aid so international students should be aware of the available resources to find financial aid options.

  1. Check with your Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP)-certified school: The United States has many different types of colleges and universities, which means that financial aid options vary. Some schools offer assistance based on financial need, while others offer academic and athletic scholarships. Talk with your school’s financial aid office and designated school official to find out what type of aid you might qualify for and how to apply.

  2. Visit EducationUSA: EducationUSA is a U.S. Department of State network with advising centers in more than 170 countries, and represents the largest group of advisers committed to promoting accredited U.S. higher education institutions. You can visit an advising center near you or visit the EducationUSA website. The website offers a variety of information about the international student process in the United States, including how to finance your studies and where to find financial aid.
