Join America’s PrepareAthon with FEMA!

April 30, 2015
Today is a national day of action for America’s PrepareAthon! Twice a year, on April 30 and September 30, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) encourages people in the United States to prepare for different types of natural disasters.

Some of the goals of America’s PrepareAthon! are to increase the number of people who understand what disasters are possible in their community, know what to do to be safe and take action to increase their preparedness.

As an international student studying in the United States, here are a few simple ways to be prepared:

  • Sign up for campus and local alerts and warnings. This can include downloading apps and checking for emergency alerts in your community;
  • Learn about which natural disasters are most likely to affect your local area and assemble emergency supplies;
  • Collect critical documents and put them in a safe place; and
  • Participate in a preparedness discussion, training or class. You can visit America’s PrepareAthon! events page for more information about local activities. See if any events are happening at your school to help you prepare.

How will you participate in America’s PrepareAthon! today? Start by sharing this post and encouraging friends and family to join the action!
