SEVIS by the Numbers: Latest Trends on International Students

August 7, 2014

The latest SEVIS by the Numbers report from the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) gives you an interesting insight on international education data. For instance, did you know that there are 966,333 F and M students studying in the United States and 75 percent of F and M students studying in the United States are from Asia?

SEVIS by the Numbers is a quarterly report using data from the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), which SEVP uses to track and monitor the status and activities of nonimmigrant students and exchange visitors who enter the United States. The report is a snapshot of relevant and useful information, including the number of international students in the United States, top places of origin and student demographics.

The July report includes a special section that focuses on China, as students from China comprise 28 percent of all F and M students in the United States. Some additional highlights from the latest SEVIS by the Numbers report includes:

  • Forty-three percent of F and M students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs study engineering.
  • Thirty-one percent of international students who participate in STEM programs enrolled in schools in California, New York and Florida.
  • The number of J-1 exchange visitors in the United States has increased by 24 percent since the April report.
