Learn About the White House Initiative on HBCUs

February 10, 2015
As we continue our celebration of Black History Month, this week we highlight the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The White House established this initiative in 1981 to pay tribute to the history and accomplishments of institutions whose mission is to educate black Americans.

As a current or prospective F or M student in the United States, Black History Month is a good time to learn about HBCUs and this White House initiative.

The White House’ Initiative supports HBCUs in the United States, such as Howard University, Hampton University, Morehouse College and Spelman College.

The White House Initiative also promotes HBCU awareness with the celebration of HBCU Week in September. This event lasts for one week and is celebrated with programs, ceremonies and activities to “acknowledge the countless contributions these institutions and their alumni have made.”

The initiative also sponsors an annual HBCU Week Conference to further promote its mission and commitment to HBCUs. Visit the White House Initiative on HBCUs' website to learn more. Interested in attending an HBCU? Remember, as an F and M international student, you may apply to an HBCU as long as the school is certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program.
