Learn About Cyber Security

October 27, 2014
October marks the 11th annual National Cyber Security Awareness month. According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), “Cybersecurity focuses on protecting computers, mobile devices, tablets, networks, programs and data from unauthorized access or manipulation.”

As an international student, you should be aware of cyber security and practice safe behavior online. DHS’ National Initiative for Cybersecurity Careers and Studies (NICCS) offers cyber security information, and promotes awareness and growth of the cyber security field. Below are some of the tips NICCS suggests to protect yourself in online activities:

  • Use antivirus software to protect devices, such as computers, tablets, smart phones and gaming systems that connect to the Internet.
  • Use privacy settings on social networking websites, and think twice about what you post and say online.
  • Use strong passwords with eight characters or more that use a combination of numbers, letters and symbols; do not share your passwords with anyone.

NICCS also promotes education in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. Students with STEM skills could become cyber security professionals — a field that is quickly growing.

Are you interested in cyber security? Visit the NICCS website for common degree programs related to cyber security careers. When you research programs, remember that you must select a Student and Exchange Visitor Program-certified school or training program.
