The Importance of SEVP Certification
The only U.S. schools that can enroll F or M students are those that are Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP)-certified. SEVP certification ensures that students attend schools that meet standards set by the Department of Homeland Security during their study in the United States.
Only SEVP-certified schools can issue Forms I-20, "Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status," to accepted students. If you are a student, you need this form to pay your I–901 SEVIS fee, apply for a visa to enter the United States and apply for certain benefits, such as a driver’s license or Social Security number.
If you are a school that wants to enroll F or M students, you have to petition for certification by submitting the Form I–17, “Petition for Approval of School for Attendance by Nonimmigrant Student.” If you need help completing the form, watch our tutorial, A Guide to Completing the Form I-17.
