Open Doors Report Released; International Student Enrollment in the United States at Record High

November 13, 2013

Every year, the Institute of International Education releases the Open Doors Report with funding from the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the Department of State. This comprehensive report includes data about students studying outside of their home country, including international students in the United States and U.S. students abroad.

The 2013 Open Doors Report shows that last year, 819,644 international students studied in U.S. programs—an all-time high enrollment. International students studied in all 50 states but most enrolled in schools in California, New York, Texas, Massachusetts and Illinois.

All of the following occurred during the 2012-2013 school year:

  • International students contributed approximately $24 billion to the U.S. economy.
  • Most students came to the United States from China, India and South Korea.
  • Close to 40,000 international students enrolled in undergraduate programs and over 311,000 students enrolled in graduate schools.
  • The University of Southern California, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and Purdue University enrolled the highest number of international students.
  • More than 21% of international students studied business.
  • A combined 36.7% of students enrolled in science, technology, engineering and math programs (e.g., engineering, math and computer science, and physical and life sciences).

The Open Doors Report is a part of International Education Week, and you can read the full report here. Follow along with Study in the States on Facebook and Twitter as we celebrate International Education Week 2013!
