New USCIS Initiative: Entrepreneurs in Residence

October 17, 2011

United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Director Alejandro Mayorkas announced a new initiative during a speech with the President’s Council on Jobs and Competitiveness in Pittsburgh, PA.

The Entrepreneurs in Residence Initiative will “utilize industry expertise to strengthen USCIS policies and practices surrounding immigrant investors, entrepreneurs and workers with specialized skills, knowledge, or abilities."

According to Director Mayorkas, the initiative will allow for greater chances to gain insight into areas that are important to the country’s economic growth. He said that “the introduction of expert views from the private and public sector will help us to ensure that our policies and processes fully realize the immigration law’s potential to create and protect American jobs.”

This new initiative will work in collaboration with initiatives that Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano and Director Mayorkas announced in early August. These initiatives seek to stimulate the economy, encourage investments and draw talented foreign entrepreneurs to generate jobs, build startup companies and invest in areas with high unemployment rates.

“Entrepreneurs in Residence” will be launched through information summits with industry leaders to gain their expert input. USCIS will take this new information and form a tactical team to create and apply useful resolutions.
