The Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) released the latest version of the SEVIS by the Numbers report, which is now available on ICE.gov/SEVIS/whats-new.

The report uses Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) data from calendar year 2019 and calendar year 2020.

This year, the report features a "COVID-19 Impact" section highlighting the pandemic's effect on international student enrollment during calendar year 2020. This section includes insights such as:

• The total number of SEVIS records for active F-1 and M-1 students was 1,251,569 in calendar year 2020, a decrease of 17.86 percent from calendar year 2019.
• U.S. schools saw dramatic decreases in new international student enrollment in August and September, traditionally months where the largest numbers of new international students enroll in U.S. schools. In August 2020, there was a 91 percent decrease in new F-1 international student enrollment and a 72 percent decrease in new M-1 international student enrollment at U.S. schools.

Other highlights and notable trends from the report include the following:

• A total of four SEVP-certified schools each enrolled more than 15,000 international students.
• The number of students from China and India made Asia the most popular continent of origin. Despite this trend, China sent fewer students in 2020 in comparison to 2019 (-91,936), as did India (-41,761).
• In 2020, California hosted 227,191 international students, the largest percentage of international students (18.2 percent) of any U.S. state.
